Rapid Response Fund

Quick support for nonprofits when unexpected happens

Sometimes the unexpected happens — and when it does, we want to help local nonprofits stay on track. The PSE Foundation is piloting a monthly, responsive grant program to help communities and nonprofit organizations cover unplanned, one time expenses of up to $5,000. These grants are designed to be quick, simple, and supportive so you can get back to serving your community without disruption.

Eligibility

Organizations must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Washington State or serving Stillwater, Montana
  • Request funding for materials, equipment, or professional labor related to an emergent need
  • Have a one time, unexpected expense that impacts your operations or programs
  • Nonprofits may only receive one Emergent Need Grant per calendar year

This grant does not limit your eligibility for any other PSE Foundation or Puget Sound Energy funding opportunities.

How It Works

We work to keep the process simple and fast:

  • Applications are reviewed during the third week of each month
  • At least two grants will be awarded monthly
  • The program is funded at $100,000 annually, with grants up to $5,000 each

Our External Affairs team evaluates requests based on:

  • The urgency and nature of the need
  • The clarity and feasibility of your solution
  • How many people will benefit from the outcome

Examples of Eligible Emergencies

These are a few common scenarios that might qualify:

  • A food bank needs immediate refrigerator or freezer repairs
  • A service vehicle breaks down unexpectedly
  • A program runs short on essential items for families in need
  • A sudden safety or health concern requires quick action

These examples aren’t exhaustive — if your organization is facing a genuine, unforeseen challenge, we encourage you to apply.

Application Information

We aim to keep the application as simple as possible. You’ll be asked to provide:

  • Nonprofit name and primary contact
  • Description of the emergent need — what happened and why support is needed
  • Confirmation that the need is one time and unplanned
  • Estimated total cost
  • Expected outcome — how this funding will help resolve the issue, and the number of people impacted
  • Timeline of repair (estimated)
